Anne Shirley, a young orphan from the fictional communityof Bolingbroke, Nova Scotia (based upon the real communityof New London, Prince Edward Island), is sent to live withMarilla and Matthew Cuthbert, unmarried siblings in theirfifties and sixties, after a childhood spent in strangers' homesand orphanages. Marilla and Matthew had originally decidedto adopt a boy from the orphanage to help Matthew run theirfarm at Green Gables, which is set in the fictional town ofAvonlea (based on Cavendish, Prince Edward Island). Througha misunderstanding, the orphanage sends Anne instead.
